Recent Actions Against Big Law 'Are An Attack on All Lawyers': Statement of Boutique and Small Law Firms

We are all small law firms concentrating in a wide range of civil and criminal matters. None of our firms are considered Big Law. Recent events compel us to denounce in the strongest possible terms, actions taken to target lawyers whether in large or small law firms across this country for the sole transgression of zealously representing the interests of their clients within the bounds of the law.

Recent retaliatory actions against Big Law are an attack on all lawyers. Strict adherence to the rule of law is the bedrock of the United States’ culture and values. We know that if anyone’s rights are denied, the rights of all are endangered.

From the time America was founded, attorneys have assumed the legal and ethical obligations to represent clients irrespective of any personal feelings on the part of their counsel. This is a necessary and proper aspect of the unbiased practice of law. We strongly condemn the decision to persecute individual lawyers and law firms for simply doing their job.

Additionally, respect and obedience to judicial orders and decisions has been considered the law of this country since its founding. We believe that all attorneys, whether working for the government or privately, owe a duty of decorum and deference to judges and their decisions and orders. No lawyer, regardless of their status, should feel empowered to disregard a judge’s demand for answers to basic legal questions. Such actions crack the very foundation of America’s legal institutions.
